It's the ideal location to stay if you are on holiday as you can easily pop out for a meal without needing to plan ahead. The house prices are amongst the most expensive in Amsterdam and the atmosphere is peaceful - yet Amsterdam's Dam Square, a tourist magnet, is only ten minutes' walk away. The Jordaan is a particularly child-friendly area. Hidden between the attractive facades of the old houses are discreet inner courtyards, many of which house charmingly quirky playgrounds.

You could rent an electric boat or pedal boat on one of the canals - just make sure you know how to steer it as you will have to share space with many other 'proper' boat users. You could hire a bike and experience Amsterdam as the locals do by cycling around the streets and bridges. The Amsterdam Museum is well worth a visit, as is the Westekerk, a working church with a tower offering magnificent views to those who climb it. Of course, you could spend the day shopping at many boutiques, and pause for a moment at one of the pavement cafes and enjoy some delicious coffee.
